Haddon Hall, Magnificent Medieval Manor House
You'd be forgiven for experiencing a sense of deja vu whilst exploring Haddon Hall. It has featured in countless TV and film productions, since as long ago as 1924. As one of England's oldest and most romantic houses, it is a film maker's dream.
Haddon is home to Lord and Lady Manners, having been owned by the Manners family for over 400 years. But it's existence can be traced much further back, all the way to the Normans. Although the village of Over Haddon was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, there was no mention of a house until 1180, from when it remained in the ownership of the Vernon family until passing to the Manners family in 1567.
The house is built of Derbyshire gritstone and limestone, from the Dark Peak and White Peak respectively and includes dramatic fortifications which were probably added to emphasise the occupiers' wealth, rather than for any military purpose.
The house became unoccupied in the 18th Century, which lasted until the 9th Duke of Rutland returned to Haddon in the early 20th Century, to begin a careful and devoted restoration of the estate.
